Alternate versions

I would love to one day design all the monsters in an RPG game, here I pretended I had to make 4 alternate skin patterns for a monster called the blue headed 4 winged demon hound

so i just xeroxed a drawing 4 times and used my Crayola watercolor kit

standard version (blue-grey)

cave version (blue)

meadow version (yellow)

forest version (green)

i also finished another book yesterday, by the author Naguib Mahfouz - Voices from the Other World: Ancient Egyptian Tales, it was a collection of short stories about ancient egypt obviously, i love the way this guy writes, very simple clear ideas that stick with you afterwords, and you think back and forth about the stories. I wanted to get a feel of his writing before plunging into one of his longer works, and I definetly will read more from him later, because I really liked it.

devil drawing

the other day in class, my teacher caught me doodling in my sketchbook while the model was on break, so he took it out of my hands and did a demo on how to draw other peoples characters and then it turned into how to change other peoples character into your own

fish man +1

here's a sketchbook page, pen drawing, goache on top. pretty quick and sloppy, using lost and found to get around the hard parts, but i am really happy with the highlight on the head.

and here is a monster doodle,

I like to tape clean paper over the bad parts of a drawing and just redraw them again until i like it, this is a nice way to do things, the golden age illustrators used a lot of tracing paper in this way as well, i just havent had a chance to experiment much with tracing paper that much yet.

i suppose that i'm from that school of drawing where you draw confidently and don't dwell much on mistakes, if it's bad just start over on a fresh page, that way you keep everything spontaneous and quick looking.

the "secret" to drawing though is you can never get things right the first time, you have to do all sorts of studies and pre-drawings to really nail every aspect and explore every idea, then once you have it all figured, you go into your final illustration concerned solely about paint application, but value, color, design and drawing have already been figured out. this is a hard thing to learn, i am still working on it.

on second thought of course, you do get lucky sometimes, sometimes a lot of lucky

quick and dirty

here are two quick sci-fi doodles from the sketchbook, pen with a watercolor wash on top

i finished the book i've been reading for the last few weeks, Kafka on the shore by Haruki Murakami i really loved it, i think murakami is just the best.

i also read over the last two days a comic book by this guy named mark andrews called collosus, it was a super cool story, but i really love the pictures, here is his blog:

Mark andrews blog

the composition and value was just really good, a level above any comic i've ever scene as far as value is concerned, and the story was very well constructed, all though i was a little unhappy with the ending

Tuatra monster

This is a monster called the Tuatra, its about 3 1/2 feet tall, but some of them can get to be a bit larger sometimes, the live in small caves near beaches and eat fish, but especially prefer eating pelican style birds. they live alone and only socialize during mating season, which is around 2 months ranging from oct-dec and only on friday nights.

sometimes if they get to much salt in their diet their scales start to turn pinkish (magenta) and get a slimer shimer to them.

this was a new approach for me, stared of drawing with a green highlighter some basic shapes, then went in with a bic pen for a drawing, then colored that with some markers, then i came back in with higgins black ink and a crowquill, and then some qouche on top of that

soldiers from a photo

just an experiment drawing from an old photo from WW2, it's orange pastel, black and white acrylic, and charcoal, painted on an olive-ish color Mat board, super fun to paint this way, using the charcoal whenever i wanted i could redraw the drawing at anytime, and using the fast drying acrylics i could push and pull values very easily, if i wanted a subtle value change i would just smear the charcoal, and that worked great too. also ignoring color made it so i only focused on value, however by having an underdrawing in a color it gave a lot of life to the grey painting.

and as usual i just find it a bit boring to copy from anything too exactly, so i didnt really worry about that part, it was just a sort of experiment afterall, with the goal to get a mood and paly with a technique rather than get any tight rendering done

figure

figure drawing is one of the most fun things you can do, it is a constant struggle of course to try and get more and more accurate, measure angles, proportions and learn all the necessary anatomy too. but you can also find this happy place where after enough practice you just go in there and just draw and it's so much fun, you can also stylize things and play with shapes and it is also probably the best time to experiment because you are drawing something you have drawn so much and are so comfortable with you can start thinking about other things and not worry so much about making a good drawing.

This drawing was definetly like that, just fun and experimental. I was definetly not thinking about coming up with a good drawing to show off, which is probably what i should have been thinking about. It was my first time drawing on vellum, and that stuff is nice! its smooth, i did a vine charcoal drawing smudged it around, then got a stick of harder charcoal and added some linework and then i got a red pastel and added a little temperature to places, i never really measured the angles, just sorta looked and drew, she was a big booty chic for sure though. it was drawn in about 35 mins i would guess.

here are some real quick sketches from recently, from the sketchbook, 1 -3 min poses. this is truly the most fun stuff

sometimes its good to do stuff like this too, this guy was just drawn out of my head, trying to remember where all thos landmarks are

and this was from looking at some figure drawings by george bridgman. i used to copy his drawing trying to make exact duplicates, but nowadays i just draw my style while looking at em

alien spacesuit

drawing space suits like this are one of my favorite thiings to draw, just playing with abstract shapes and pulling something out of it, this was just real quick with pen and watercolor

i like especially in this one that the colorrs are a bit icky, i think sometimes you can really give character by color

Soria Moria Castle

here is a story illustration for a fairy tale.

the fairy tale was called Soria Moria castle, its about a hero Halvor who kills a troll with 9 heads, this is the part where he only has 1 head left. its 8 1/2 by 11 and painted in an opaque watercolor called Guache. The story is totally awesome, and with a story like that, its gets you excited and makes you wanna do good work. i really want to work on this picture again, perhaps in a couple of months or so, to fix some of the issues i have with it.

Caption:

"Ugh!Ugh!Ugh! Here I smell the Blodd of a christian man!" roared the troll.
At the same moment, Halvor cut off the first Head, and then all the others; but the last on was the toughest of them all, and it was the hardest job Halvor ever had getting that off, even though he felt strong enough.

some sketches to figure it out

since i really don't draw that much fantasy i looked at a lot of painting by one of my favorite artists, Frank Frazzetta. he is a real master of composition and drawing and how to find easy solutions to save time on the hard parts of a painting by simplifying shapes. Aswell as being awesome in all the aspects of art in general.

here is a little color copy i doodled to just help me get in the zone while i worked on this picture, i think copying from a master artist is very important when you are a student of art, it lets you start to understand the relationships in a picture with a much more sensitive view than looking can give you .
