the sheriff

The colors are influenced from an inspirational talk given by Robert Kondo where I was shown the techniques of japanese master illustrator Tadahiro Uesugi. The spots on the shirt are from a memory i had of a class with Barbara Bradley. She is a fantastic teacher who taught at my school for fifty years, one day in her class we were drawing cowboys. She came over and told me my drawing would be better if i added a pattern to the cowboys shirt, since thats how they had them, showing me a Tom Lovell illustration as an example. So i did, and it was better. i didn't know why then, and i don't know why now, sometimes things just work.

and the sketch, i think its interesting to show since it is totally unrelated to the value plan i ended up going with.

sometimes i feel like my role in a drawing is as a negotiator or caretaker for the transition of dead/blank empty page into awesome lifeform/drawing. it's really fun. However sometimes i get so absorbed in the zen state of drawing that i get lazy with the thinking analytical part, and problems emerge.

anyway enough metaphysical talk, these are all problematic drawings, but i like em anyway

thanks for looking!
